Joan Hetherington

Joan Hetherington

Comforted by her loving daughters, Joan Beatrice Hetherington, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister (in-law), daughter, aunt and friend, passed away at Brightshores Health Services in Owen Sound on Thursday, April 3rd.  She was in her 85th year.

She was born in Chesley, Ontario on April 21st, 1940, to the late Grant and Beatrice (nee Metzger) Dobson. Joan married her sweetheart, James (Jim) Hetherington in Chesley in 1960. Together they enjoyed raising their two daughters in Listowel eventually becoming proud grandparents.

Joan loved nothing more than to create and to immerse herself into handmade projects that brought her true joy. Her passion and talent for doing so was nothing short of amazing. She was a master at each of her crafts and made a lasting impression with all who knew her as an avid gardener, seamstress, quilter and rug hooker.  She enjoyed teaching others her skills and leaves behind exquisite creations that will be treasured by many for years to come.

She had a special place in her heart for Samaritan’s Purse Canada and, more specifically, Operation Christmas Child. She encouraged everyone she knew to fill shoeboxes with much-needed supplies for the less fortunate.

Joan loved quietly, always relished a cup of tea, preferred desserts over any main course and had a soft spot in her heart for Boston Terriers, two of which she enjoyed during her later years.

Loved mother of Jan Gebhardt of Walkerton and Julie Brown of Meaford. Loved grandmother of Alex (Mary), Aaron (Ingrid), Holly and Austin. Fondly remembered by her sister Bonnie (Dennis) Parass of Burlington, brother Wayne (Bea) Dobson of the Ottawa area, sister-in-law, Gwen Becker of Port Elgin.  Predeceased by her husband Jim (2002).

In keeping with Joan’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a Graveside Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at 11 am at the Hanover Cemetery with refreshments following at the Hanover Lawn Bowling Club. Pastor Jenn Brown officiating. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Mighton Funeral Home, Hanover.

Memorial donations to the Saugeen Hospice or to the Owens Sound Gardens Retirement Residence (their Recreation/Craft fund) would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.mightonfuneralhome.ca.
