Verna Elizabeth Nickel

Verna Elizabeth Nickel

Verna Elizabeth Nickel (nee Weppler) of Hanover, passed away peacefully at the Hanover & District Hospital on Sunday, March 30, 2025. She was in her 90th year.

Born in Normanby Township, on January 25, 1936 to the late Andrew and Amelia Weppler.  She worked at the Owen Sound Hospital as a Health Care Worker as well as at the former Canada Packers in Harriston and after caring for her children, she returned to work as a Health Care Worker at the Village in Hanover.  She enjoyed the compassion and challenges that nursing held and was a natural at it. Verna enjoyed simplicity and found peace when walking the trails around Hanover. In her younger years, she took pleasure in the earth with her gardening and and enjoyed the calmness of pulling weeds and making something beautiful come out of the ground. It was her comfort to just listen to the trees, wind and be surrounded by nature. She was a voracious reader and was always able to stay up on the current events going on around the world. She was a role model for those around her to pay attention and stay interested in things that were happening.  She was also a faithful watcher of her beloved Toronto Blue Jays and never missed tuning into Jeopardy to always learn something new.

Loved by her son Larry (Cassandra) Nickel of Edmonton and special granddaughter Scarlett.  Fondly remembered by her siblings Audrey Behr, Paul (Yvonne) Weppler and Brian (Wendy) Weppler as well as many nieces, nephews and their families. Predeceased by her beloved husband Carl (2005) and her daughter Catherine and her siblings Violet (Marwood Thoms), Marie (Keith Knipe) and Reuben Weppler.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial visitation at Mighton Funeral Home, Hanover on Thursday, June 19, 2025 from 3-5pm. All are welcome to attend a Graveside Service at the Hanover Cemetery on Friday, June 20th, 2025 at 11 am. Pastor Jenn Brown officiating.

As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to the Ontario March of Dimes https://give.marchofdimes.ca and Meals on Wheels https://www.mealsonwheels.ca/ would be appreciated by the family. Messages of condolences are welcomed at www.mightonfuneralhome.ca
