Lorne Francis Waechter, of Hanover, a man whose strength, kindness, and unwavering devotion touched the lives of all who knew him, passed away at South Bruce Grey Health Center on March 21, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Succumbing to Alzheimer's disease, Lorne reunites with the heavenly father 9 days short of his 93rd birthday.
Born on March 30, 1932, in Walkerton, Ontario Lorne was the son of the late Andrew and Susan (Hehn) Waechter. He was a beacon of strength from an early age, stepping into the role of provider at just thirteen to support his mother and siblings. This early responsibility shaped him into a man of extraordinary work ethic and unwavering dedication to his family.
Lorne's hands were his tools, and his faith was his guide. He became a carpenter, a skilled homebuilder, and a trusted contractor, crafting not just structures, but a foundation of security and love for his family. He generously shared his trade knowledge, mentoring countless young men and relatives, leaving an indelible mark on the community.
Beyond his tireless work, Lorne was a man of deep and abiding faith. His commitment to his Catholic community was evident in his service as Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus and his quiet devotion during weekly adoration at the Hanover church, well into his 80’s. For over 50 years, Lorne lifted his voice in celebration as a member of the Hanover and Walkerton church choirs and he was humbled when asked to contribute his vocal talents as a soloist at weddings.
Many will fondly recall Lorne's cheerful calls during Sunday evening Bingo at the Knights of Columbus, a testament to his joyful spirit and passion for playing games and cards. Whether a game of solo with his siblings or a game of Aggravation with his grandchildren, you could always count grandpa in.
Left behind to honor Lorne's memory is his beloved wife of 57 years Mary Lou (nee: Weaver) Waechter, and his three children Christine (nee: Waechter) Stiller of Jupiter, Florida, Laurie Waechter of Walkerton, and Randall (Katerina Petrovskaya) Waechter of Hanover. Lorne was also a proud grandpa to his two grandchildren Natalie Stiller and Logan Anness, who brought light and laughter into his life.
Lorne was predeceased by his brothers Alfred, Joseph, and Ralph Waechter, and his sister Wilma (Waechter) Reitzel. He leaves behind his sister, Marjorie (Waechter) Lang of Walkerton, and a host of family and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Visitation will be held at Mighton Funeral Home, Hanover, on Wednesday, March 26th, 2025, from 4-7 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Walkerton, on Thursday March 27th, 2025, at 11 am. Father Les Szczygiel officiating. Cremation will follow, with inurnment in Holy Family Cemetery, Hanover.
Lorne's life was a testament to the power of hard work, the beauty of faith, and the enduring strength of family love. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched. May he rest in eternal peace. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lorne’s name can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
To Mary Lou, Christine, Laurie, Randy and all of the Family.
Was sorry to hear of the loss of a dear husband, father, and grandfather.

- William SchinbeinDear Christine and Christine's Family,
We are holding you and your family close during this time. From what you've shared over the years and what we read in his beautiful tribute, it's clear that your father was full of strength, generosity, faith, and love.
His legacy lives on through you. The way you lead with conviction and careâ€"the way you uplift everyone around youâ€"directly reflects the values he instilled in you. As he mentored so many with skill and heart, so do you.
May you find peace in knowing that his spirit, songs, and joy live on in the lives he touched and the family he so deeply loved. We are grateful to know you, Christine, and honored to walk beside you in work and in life.
With love and respect, Nina, Sandy, Gina, Kristen & Crew
So sorry, Mary Lou. I didn't know Lorne well but my husband, Ray met with Lorne when he was considering joining the Knights. They were two peas in a pod.
Sure enough Ray became a Knight and later a member of the Fourth Decree

My heart goes out to the whole family - Mary Lou, Christine, Randy, Laurie and the grandkids and extended family. I had the pleasure of meeting Lorne decades ago through my friend Christine, his daughter, at her wedding. I recruited him to teach me how to polka which he did with enthusiasm! Over the years when our paths crossed it was always a pleasure to see his twinkling eyes.
His obituary is a wonderful testimonial to one of the "old school" good ones. These big-hearted softies leave a big hole when they leave and I share in the sadness of his passing. May his memory be a blessing to all who got the chance to work, play, sing and dance with this wonderful man. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
Mary Lou, our sincere sympathy to you and your family. Lorne is now at a place of peace. Remember the good times throughout your lives.
