Herta Brenndorfer passed away peacefully on March 1, 2025 at the age of 96 at the Village Long-Term Care Home in Hanover, Ontario.
Survived by sons, Peter (Marlene) of New Zealand, Alfred (Dawn) of Elmwood, Thomas of Guelph, and daughters Dora and Julia of Toronto. She leaves behind 8 grandchildren (Shannon, Jodi, Brandi, Brittany, Michael, Mark, Daniel, Christian). Also 16 great-grandchildren (Hayden, Brenna, Leah, Paige, Talen, Chase, Nixon, Kingston, DJ, Samantha, Gracelyn, Ivan, Olivia, Vivienne, Andrew, Bastian). She is also survived by one sister, Magdalene Dobrat of Walkerton and one brother, Helmut Dobrat in Germany.
Predeceased by her husband, Wilhelm (1993), her daughter, Anne (2020), and three brothers (Walter, Arthur, Werner) and one sister (Lydia) in Germany.
Herta was born on October 29, 1928 in East Prussia to Johannes and Bertha Dobrat. She had many fond memories of her childhood on a farm and country life. Her family had to flee their home in 1944 due to the advance of the Russian army in World War II. Herta and her sisters became separated from the rest of their family escaping warfare during the flight from home. Herta and her sisters made it together to West Germany, where they found work to support themselves and a temporary home with a German family.
Most of her family members were reunited later in West Germany, but they were never able to return to live in their former home in East Prussia after World War II. Herta then took a job in England, where she met and married Wilhelm Brenndorfer from Romania.
Wilhelm and Herta moved to Canada in 1952, crossing the Atlantic by ship to arrive at Pier 21 in Halifax and then moving to Ontario. They soon bought a farm near Elmwood, Ontario where they raised their family. After Wilhelm’s passing in 1993, Herta sold the farm, lived with her daughters in Toronto for a few years, and eventually moved into a senior’s apartment in Hanover.
Herta possessed a strength and faith that brought her through the many challenges of life with grace. Memorial donations to the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Elmwood or the charity of your choice are appreciated as expressions of sympathy. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Mighton Funeral Home, Hanover. Messages of condolences are welcome at www.mightonfuneralhome.ca
