Jeannette ‘Jenny’ Gertrude Near, of Hanover, passed away at Hanover and District Hospital, on Monday, December 30, 2024 in her 87th year.
Born in Carrick Township on July 15, 1938, to the late Seraphine and Eugenia (nee Kueneman) Schwartz. 'Jenny' enjoyed living in the Hanover area, and many will remember her working as a caterer for Bender's Catering. She was a faithful member of Holy Family Church in Hanover, and served for many years with the C.W.L. 'Jenny' loved a good game of cards, with one of her favourite games being Rummoli. She had a group of close friends she played Rummoli with weekly for many years, and later, she enjoyed cards at Holy Family on Tuesdays as well. As much as Jenny loved a good game of cards with friends, family was always at the forefront. She was a proud wife, mom, grandma, and great grandma, and loved quality time with her family. She will be missed.
Survived by son David Black of Fort Frances, and daughter Cathy (Wayne) Fischer of Hanover. 'Grandma Jenny' to her grandchildren Marissa and Dustin (Cortney), and great grandchildren Kira, Ashton, Blake, and Ryker. Step-mother of Rob (Johanna) Near, and Denise (Tom) Near and their children Elizabeth and Jonathon, all of Barrie. Fondly remembered by sister-in-law Marj Schwartz of Brockton, Claudette (Lee) Winchester of Ottawa, Gord (Sheila) Black of Orleans, and Betty Ann Young of St. John, New Brunswick, as well as many nieces, nephews, and their families. Predeceased by her parents, 1st husband Al Black (1982), 2nd husband Don Near (2022), brothers Bill (Dorla) and Jerry Schwartz, and sister Betty (Cyril) Lemay.

I'm so sorry to hear of Jenny's passing. She was truly a lovely person and I remember clearly how excited she was when her first grandbaby, Marissa, was born! Lots of good memories from when we were all kids and all those catering jobs too! I'm sure you are missing her terribly. My thoughts and prayers to you all.
- Chrystelle OwensI met Jenny when I was a patient in London hospital over 30 yrs ago. She was such a nice person to share a room with. My husband & I went Hanover for a visit with Jenny & Don and were welcomed with open arms. She spoke fondly of her family & you could tell that they meant the world to her. She loved her job catering & the friends she made helping cater. Iam sure that she will be missed by many.
God bless you Jenny.
