John Lowell Shantz, of Arthur, passed away unexpectedly at Caressant Care Nursing Home in Arthur on Thursday, September 28, 2023. He was 89 years old.
Born on December 8, 1933 in Waterloo Township, to the late John and Ida (nee Bechtel) Shantz, Lowell was a retired electrician and worked for IBEW Local 804 for many years until retiring. He was a man of faith and showed that through his volunteering with Mennonite Disaster Service, Habitat for Humanity, House of Friendship, as well as numerous Church Committees. He was a Conference Rep for many years.
Survived by loving wife Lorene (nee Erb) Shantz of Arthur, of whom they just celebrated 66 wonderful years of marriage. Loved father of Barry Shantz of Kitchener-Waterloo, Steven (Kate) Shantz of Goshen Indiana, USA, Roger (Gayle) Shantz of Chatham and Darlene (Dan) Driedger of Drayton. Loved Grandfather of Michael, Heather (Kimal), Rebecca, Emily (Jarrod), Ben, Diana (Andrew), Rachel (Chris), Adam, Tim (Amy), and Sara (Cody). Dearly loved by his great grandchildren Ambrose, Theodora, Liesl, Paxton, Sylas, Griffin, Dayton, Kinsey and Wesley and Gabriel. Fondly remembered by his siblings Mae Baer of Wilmot Township, Alice Gascho of Cambridge, Norma Shantz of Cambridge, and Helen (Arnold) MacDonald of St. George, as well as many nieces, nephews and their families. Lowell will be missed by the entire Erb Family. Predeceased by his parents, sister Jean Shantz, and brothers in law Norman Gascho and Morgan Baer.
Family and friends are invited to visitation held at Mighton Funeral Home, Hanover, on Sunday, October 1, 2023 from 2-4 pm & 6-8pm. The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, October 2, 2023 at 11:00 am, at Hanover Missionary Church.
Due to the increase of COVID-19 in our area, the family would appreciate the wearing of masks to help prevent the spread and to keep everyone safe. For those unable to attend the service, it will be livestreamed through the Funeral Home's Youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@MightonFuneralHomeLtd/streams), and the video will also be available here on the obituary page.
Memorial donations to the Hanover Mennonite Church or to the Mennonite Central Committee would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
