Gerald Kenneth Fidler passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 in his 88th year with his loving daughter and wife by his side.
Gerry was born on May 31, 1935 and was the youngest of 9 children. His sister Marian "Esther" is the only surviving sibling. Lillian (Percy Martin), Harold (Pauline), Ivan (Joy), Clarence (Rita), Clayton, Edward (Mary), Bill (Rena), Marian "Esther" and her husband Charles Dallas and last but not least along came Gerry. Gerry and his wife Verona married in 1979 and had two children - Paul (deceased in 1992) and Cindy (Gord) Lusby. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and several in-laws.
Gerry joined the work force full time when he was just 16. He spent four seasons sailing on Great Lakes Freightliners, worked in Oakville for about 10 years building swimming pools, then 20 years working for Ontario Hydro - a more reliable employee was hard to find. Gerry even worked on his days off - no job was too big or too small. While at Hydro he was proud to receive a "Safety Award" and retired as Acting General Foreman. Gerry was a great family man and excellent provider. After retiring from Hydro, until the age of 80, he and his wife spent every winter enjoying the beautiful weather in Bradenton, Florida. Good health continued for him until recently when he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer.
We want to thank Dr. Marc LaBelle and the staff at Hanover & District Hospital for all the incredible care and kindness extended to Gerry during these difficult times, as well as all the staff at McVean Lodge, who went above and beyond and made us feel like family. He will be missed and loved longer than forever.
Visitation will be held at Mighton Funeral Home, Hanover, on Thursday, January 19, 2023 from 1-3 & 6-8 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday, January 20, 2023 at 11 am. Pastor Lyndsay McGregor officiating. Interment in Hanover Cemetery, Hanover.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honour Gerry or to show expressions of sympathy can do so through donating to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
Dear Cindy, Verona and family
So sorry for your loss. Gerry was a great man. He was always such a positive influence with his sense of humour and attitude about things. I remember him coming out to Roland's farm where Cindy had her horse and helping us with hay one time. He was riding the hay wagon saying how great it was and I was just wondering how he could think bailing hay was fun, haha. He's given everyone some great memories I'm sure.
Cindy, I remember how much you admired your dad. He was always good to me, putting up with the little 'extra' girl always hanging around his house. And...I'll always be thankful that he took care of that cat that used to sit on Chiquita's saddle.

Our condolences to Cindy and family. I can still remember those early mornings when Paul and Gerry would pick me up for a ride to Hockey practice at the old coliseum in Hanover. As the obituary says you could not find a nicer decent man around. You will be in our prayers. Time may not heal the wounds of losing a loved one but it does help dull the pain.
