Murray Anderson Sherk passed away at Revera L.T.C. in Hanover, Ontario on December 7, 2022. He was 100.
Son of the late Pearlous and Nellie (nee Anderson) Sherk. Murray was born September 8, 1922 on the family farm - Concession 12, in the former Bentinck Township. He attended Crawford Public School. Murray did not get the chance to attend High School as in those days one had to board in town for the winter months, but for a man with only a Grade 8 education, he achieved many goals.
At the age of thirteen, he worked on the family farm and hired himself out to cut wood and help with threshing. At age sixteen, he and his mom took over the farm while his father fought in WWII. On July 5, 1947, he married the love of his life, the late Verlie (nee Mervyn) Sherk, and they resided on the home farm. Murray did custom farm work like combining in three different townships. He was a hard worker but always found ways to make it fun! Murray had a real zest for life, enjoying the challenges he took on. Murray had an interest in serving his community. He was a director of the Federation of Agriculture for Bentinck Township, served 3 years on the Elmwood Credit Union Board, and was President of the Elmwood and Chesley Co-op Board. He was a Bentinck Township Councillor, Bentinck Deputy Reeve, Bentinck Reeve and Grey County Councillor. Murray also took joy in serving his church down through the years as a moderator for the Owen Sound Baptist Association of Churches, director for the Baptist Men's Group, Sunday School Superintendent, deacon, trustee, kids ministry leader and coordinator for the seniors group. After selling the farm, he worked for Fleming Construction as a cement foreman and then production coordinator. He also drove ambulance for Hanover Hospital. Next, he pursued Real Estate, and did this for 14 years. He enjoyed working with people and helping them find what they were looking for. After they retired, Murray and Verlie moved out to the Lamlash area on Grey Rd 3. They were snowbirds and enjoyed Lakeland Florida for 12 wonderful years. In the summer months he was an avid gardener, but could be found swinging in his hammock at the end of the day playing his harmonica.
Predeceased by his wife of 73 years Verlie (nee Mervyn) Sherk. Also predeceased by his son John Lyle Sherk, his son in law Keith McDougall, his sisters and brothers in law Helen and Charlie Campbell and Margaret and Keith Robinson; his sister in law Edith and Fred Schmidt and brother in law Gordon and Lillian Mervyn and his great great granddaughter. Loved father of Lorraine (Ken) Helwig of Clifford, Carol McDougall of Hanover and Colleen (Brad) Yenssen of West Grey. Murray was the proud grandfather of 8 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held at Victory Fellowship Baptist Church in Hanover on Friday, December 16, 2022 from 10 am until time of a service at 11am. Spring interment in Chesley Cemetery, Chesley.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Victory Fellowship Baptist Church or to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
