Mary Poechman

Mary Poechman, of Brockton, passed away peacefully at SBGHC-Walkerton, on Tuesday, November 28, 2017. She was 82.

Born on July 21, 1935 in Brant Township to the late Peter and Agnes (nee Walter) Zettler on the 10th of Brant.  Mary loved farming along side her husband Harold and was active with the Southline Women's Institute and Ladies Auxiliary in Carlsruhe. Mary always enjoyed singing; her earliest memory is of sitting in the kitchen on the farm singing in the rocking chair to the tune of "You are my Sunshine" when her Dad got up at 6 am. She sang in her early school years at the S.S. #5 Brant. In Grades 2 & 3, she recalled singing "White Cliffs of Dover" and "Far Away Place with Strange Sounding Names". She went on to many choirs. Grade 7: with Sr. Helen Schwan; the Walkerton Sacred Heart Church Choir for many years; the Grey Bruce Singers for nearly 20 years; the Holy Family Seniors Choir, organist at St. Francis Xavier 1986-2006; having recieved the Chartwell Retirement Home Trophy for a solo in 2012 as a highlight of her musical career. Mary took the Commercial Course in High School which enabled her to be Len Schmidt Motors' bookkeeper for 2 years, training his next accountant who stayed the duration of the business. She did a short stint at the Howe Motors in Paisley until it burnt down. She was Holy Family School's Secretary for a number of years. She also did a year at the Walkerton Vet Clinic until her husband's business of Pioneer Corn Sales required her full time attention.

Survived by loving husband Harold Poechman of Hanover. Loved mother of Gerald (Marlene) Poechman of Walkerton, Barb (Steve) Schuknecht of Chesley, Marianne Poechman and Wayne (Jan) Poechman both of Walkerton. Special grandmother of Maria (Brian), Matthew (Tamar), Melissa (Ben), Ben, Daniel, Sean (Nadine), Katie, Nathan (Lindsay), Mary Sue, Jacob (Tori), Paul (Holly), Christine, Heather, Shawna and great grandchildren, who brought her so much joy: Peyton, Easton, Ilan, Luna, Charlotte and Karissa. Dear sister of Teresa Schnurr of Walkerton, Walter (Dorothy) Zettler of Brockton, Vera Schmidt of Walkerton, Len (Edna) Zettler of Cargill, Sr. Lois Zettler S.S.N.D. Beatrice of Waterdown, Francis (Eugenia) Zettler of Brockton, Helen Zettler of Walkerton, Jerome (Sandi) Zettler of Hanover, Denis (Jan) Zettler of Wallacetown. Mary will be fondly remembered by her brother-in-law Jim Rich of Formosa as well as many nieces, nephews and their families. Predeceased by her sisters Cleta (Leo) Hoffarth, Stella Rich and brothers-in-law Wally Schnurr and Raymond Schmidt.

Visitation will be held at Mighton Funeral Home, Hanover, on Sunday, December 3, 2017 from 2-3:30pm and 7-9pm with Vigil Prayers at 3:30pm. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, December 4, 2017 at St. Francis Xavier Church, Carlsruhe at 11am. Interment in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Carlsruhe.
