Charles "Charlie" Martin

Charles "Charlie" Martin, of Hanover, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Hanover and District Hospital on Sunday, October 20, 2019.  He was 94.

Born in Bentinck Township on July 23, 1925 to the late Clarence and Martha (nee Hertzberger) Martin.

Charlie had a wide range of interests during his years of employment and community service. He served in the Canadian Army, stationed at Kingston from Feb. 1944 to May 1946, then returning to Hanover, he married Mildred in June 1946. He worked at the Peppler Furniture factory for 30 years, later working part-time and then full-time (from 1971) at the Dominion Store until his retirement in 1986. Everywhere that Charlie went Mildred was close beside; they were actively involved in the Hanover Bentinck and Brant Ag Society, the Hanover Raceway and St Matthews Ev Lutheran Church. Charlie also refereed and coached minor hockey and served on the Hanover Barons executive.  He was a lifetime Barons supporter and even attended games this season. Charlie was tireless in making his time available to the town of Hanover; he and Mildred were the Hanover Citizen(s) of the Year in 2012. Charlie was an avid hobby sheep farmer, an interest that continued with his involvement in the local Purebred Sheep Breeders and Wool Growers associations. He was also a skilled wood worker and loved his model trains, but his true love was being the number one fan of his grand and great-grand children’s sports and activities.

Survived by sons Brian Martin (Marianne Voogt) of Brantford, Harry (Lori) Martin of Bentinck Township, daughters Jean (Gerald) Horst of Hanover, Diane (Mike) Osborne of Harrowsmith and daughter in law Norma Martin of Walkerton.  Forever loved grandpa of Daniel (Amy), Carrie (Brad), Jamie (Jeremy), Kelly (Mike), Steven (Lori-Anne), Joshua (Amy), Troy, Zachary and great grandchildren Travis, Aiden, Aliyah, Brooklynn, Landon, Addison, Dylan, Hayley, Natalie, Ryleigh, Brennon, Lila, Noah and Emeline. Predeceased by his beloved wife Mildred, son Raymond and sister Alice Diebel.
